The award winning Vancouver Convention Centre’s new West building boasts 338,000 sq ft of function and meeting space and has become a show piece of architecture, construction and sustainability. Key design elements include a six-acre “living roof” that houses thousands of indigenous plants. 40% of the building is suspended over water with the foundation specifi cally designed to recreate a natural shoreline for marine life. The project was completed in April 2009 and was geared to attain gold standard under LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
Ocean recommended HARD-CEM for its full depth hardening capability that would enhance the life span of the exhibition facility and create an economic savings for the owner. The large concrete fl oor area required a uniform product placement that would not delay construction. HARD-CEM will provide the facility with a concrete exhibition fl oor with superior hardness and abrasion resistance required for the high traffic, high use area. HARD-CEM dosage of 40 kg/m3 concrete was added at the Ocean production facility. HARD-CEM was an excellent option for this environmentally friendly facility as its use typically qualifi es towards the LEED Green Building Rating System.
